LASIK has helped millions of people achieve clearer vision. This laser eye surgery procedure reshapes the cornea, allowing those with refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism to see without contacts or eyeglasses in most cases. While the surgery itself is relatively quick and painless, proper recovery is necessary to ensure success and lasting vision correction. At LASIK by OCLI Vision, we take post-operative care and recovery just as seriously as the surgery, so we’ve gathered our best tips for what to expect after LASIK eye surgery and ensuring a comfortable and healing recovery from LASIK.
The Immediate Recovery Timeline (First 24 Hours)
The LASIK eye surgery recovery time is different for each patient, but may last for up to a full year for complete vision stabilization. Directly following surgery, you may experience grogginess or disorientation due to the sedatives you received prior to surgery. This is very normal and should go away within 24 hours. Your eye surgeon will most likely tell you to keep your eyes closed as much as possible for the first day, as it is important for your cornea to start healing right away in closed conditions.
Following surgery, it may feel like there is something in your eye, like sand or dust, which is a direct result of the cornea starting to heal. Your eyes may also sting or burn. It is imperative that you do not scratch or rub your eyes at this point, as this could cause damage to the cornea or introduce bacteria which could lead to an infection. After all the time and effort you have put into achieving clearer vision, it would be very disheartening to develop a preventable problem at this early stage of recovery.
Right after surgery, many patients ask, “How long after laser eye surgery can you see clearly?” And, while each patient is different, one of the advantages of laser eye surgery like LASIK is that clearer vision happens remarkably fast, usually within 24 hours. Most patients report being able to see without eyeglasses the next morning, although some blurriness or haziness may persist. The before and after LASIK eye surgery is really a sight to behold.
Managing Expected Side Effects
Although healing from LASIK is fast, there are still some eye laser operation side effects to be aware of. Some of the most common side effects include:
- Foggy vision after LASIK surgery – Most foggy or blurry vision is the result of the corneal swelling and the healing of the flap that was created to access the cornea. Most patients report that foggy vision goes away within a week, but it may persist intermittently for awhile longer. If you are concerned about your blurry vision, contact your ophthalmologist right away.
- Dry eyes – This is the most common side effect of LASIK eye surgery, impacting almost all patients at some point. As the corneal nerves heal and the eye begins to produce more tears, your dry eyes will resolve. However, this can take anywhere from six months to a year, so it is best to be patient and continue to avoid scratching or itching your eyes extensively.
- Light sensitivity – Halos around lights at night and a sensitivity to bright lights is generally due to swelling and your vision adjusting. As the eyes continue to heal, the sensitivity should diminish.
Most discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter anti-inflammatories and artificial tears, as recommended by your eye surgeon. Some minimal side effects are to be expected after surgery, but if they last longer than the indicated time, it’s best to consult with your eye doctor. Additionally, if you are experiencing prolonged or intense headaches after laser eye surgery, contact your surgeon immediately as this may indicate a more serious problem.
Essential Post-Op Care: The Rules
While it might seem like a fairly relaxed surgery, LASIK post-op care rules must be followed exactly to ensure proper healing and the best outcomes. It is vital that you follow these rules after LASIK:
- Eye Drops for Laser Eye Surgery (Both antibiotic and lubricating)
- Follow your prescription exactly as directed to prevent infection. Usually, antibiotic eye drops will need to be applied four times daily for a week.
- Apply lubricating drops frequently, at least every hour during the first few days, and then as needed for the months following. These eye drops encourage healing and comfort.
- Never skip an antibiotic eye drop dose, even if you think your eyes are fine!
- Eye Protection
- When considering how long to wear sleep goggle after LASIK, they should be worn consistently for at least a week to protect your delicate eyes while you sleep. Your surgeon may recommend a different amount of time depending on your eyes.
- Keep the mask clean and dry to prevent growth of bacteria.
- No Touching, Rubbing, or Scratching Eyes
How long after LASIK can I rub my eyes? You must wait at least one month before rubbing or scratching your eyes. This is to prevent damage to the cornea and the development of infections, both of which can harm your vision permanently.
Returning to Normal Life
If you follow the prescribed guidelines successfully, you should be on your way back to normal life very quickly, with only minor restrictions. Generally, our patients are given the following rules about when they can return to everyday activities following LASIK:
LASIK recovery time, return to work – Most patients are able to return to work in 1-3 days, depending on their job. You may be required to wear protective eye gear at work for a bit longer.
- Driving – You must be cleared for driving by your eye doctor. Generally, most patients are cleared during their one-day follow-up appointment. However, wait until you have been cleared and feel comfortable driving.
- Exercise and Sweating – Most surgeons will advise patients to wait at least a week before performing any vigorous exercise or sweating profusely; this helps to prevent accidental eye trauma and delayed healing. Light walking is fine.
- Swimming and Hot Tubs – Dirty water can disrupt the healing process and put you at risk for an infection. You should wait two to four weeks before swimming or wading in pools, lakes, and the ocean. Hot tubs should be given 4 weeks, and you should wear air-tight goggles for the first couple of months.
- Makeup – First, consider replacing any pre-LASIK makeup as it may harbor bacteria. Second, wait at least one to two weeks before applying any type of makeup to your eyes and around your eyes.
Can you wear contacts after LASIK? Since you will have had vision correction surgery, you will most likely not need your contact lenses. It’s best to avoid using colored and non-prescription lenses as well, but you can discuss your situation with your surgeon.
Long-Term Recovery & Follow-up
It’s important to note that, while your vision will improve in the first couple of days and weeks following surgery, full vision stabilization can take months to a year. During this time it is vital that you attend all of your follow-up appointments and adhere to the above guidelines. During this time, you may notice fluctuations in vision clarity, particularly in different lighting conditions or when you’re tired. These minor changes are normal as your cornea settles into its new shape.
At your one-year follow-up appointment, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation of your vision. By this point, your vision should be stable, and any temporary side effects like dry eyes or light sensitivity should have largely resolved. Your doctor will measure your visual acuity, check your corneal health, and assess whether you’ve achieved the vision correction goals established before surgery. If minor prescription changes are needed, your surgeon can discuss options, though the vast majority of patients require no further intervention and simply continue with annual routine eye exams to maintain their eye health!

LASIK recovery can be very straightforward and comfortable if you follow the above recommendations, take prescribed medications as directed, and attend all follow-up appointments.
